Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N) in Leadership

Application and Admission Information

This program is designed as a part-time, 33-credit-hour program to be completed in six consecutive semesters. Students engage in collaborative peer sessions throughout the coursework of the program. These sessions allow students to directly engage with faculty and content experts in various settings.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon program completion, graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate concepts (e.g., leadership skills to improve quality of care) consistent with advanced nursing practice.
  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of nursing science and evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health-related needs of individuals and populations including the underserved and vulnerable.

Fall Admissions

Spring Admissions

  • Opens - June 1st
  • Closes - November 1st at midnight

Application Requirements:
Online Application: Complete an online application submitted through the GGHSON application. A non-refundable $75 application fee is required.

Upload the following:

  • Resume/CV: A professional resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Professional Letters of Recommendation: Three professional letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s ability to complete academic requirements, demonstrate professional competencies, and personal character are required. Appropriate reference sources include faculty members, professional colleagues, or work supervisors who understand the demands of a graduate program and can speak to the applicant’s potential for success. Applicants may electronically request professional letters of recommendation from the EP Tech Application portal.
  • Official transcripts: Submit official transcripts from all postsecondary transcripts from every school where college credit was earned, not just degree-granting institutions. Applicants with foreign academic credentials must provide academic records in the original language with certified English translation and US equivalencies. Applicants may also submit official transcripts by mail or email to:

  • RN License: Proof of a valid and unencumbered RN license: A valid and unencumbered RN license in the state of the applicant’s residency. Students must have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) prior to starting their M.S.N. coursework.
  • TOEFL: Official TOEFL score (if applicable)

Upon acceptance, students are required to pay a combined, non-refundable, $150 placement and orientation fee. Instructions on payment procedure is included in the offer letter. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all required documents are complete and submitted by 11:59 p.m. (MST) on the application deadline. If any admission components are incomplete or are not received by the deadline, the application will not be considered. All applications are reviewed in an individual and holistic manner. No single factor will be used to determine a student’s admission.

Admissions Requirements:
All applicants to the MSN program must complete online applications listed on the M.S.N. website. Students must meet the minimum requirements listed below to be considered for admission:

  • Prerequisite Coursework: All applicants are required to have completed a three-semester-credit-hour or four-quarter-credit-hour statistics course with a B or better from an accredited college or university.
  • Previous Education: A bachelor’s in nursing degree (B.S.N.) from a regionally accredited college or university with nursing program accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the American Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), formerly the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): A minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA in nursing coursework. Provisional admission can be offered to applicants with a GPA that falls between 2.85 and 2.99 in nursing coursework. Students admitted under provisional status must achieve a 3.0 GPA in the first three (3) courses of the major to progress in the graduate program.
  • R.N. License: A valid and unencumbered R.N. license in the state of the applicant’s residency. Students must have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) prior to starting their M.S.N. coursework.

Offer of Admission
There are a limited number of positions available each semester. Notices of admission are sent via email. Applicants should respond to the offer of admission no later than the deadline stated in the offer letter by accepting the offer and paying $150 non-refundable placement fee. Failure to respond by the deadline or to participate in the mandatory new student orientation results in withdrawal of the offer of admission.

International Applicants Requiring an F-1 Visa
The TTUHSC El Paso campus is unable to offer admission to international students requiring an F1 Visa.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Submit official TOEFL scores (if applicable).

Foreign Academic Credentials
In addition to stated admissions requirements, applicants with foreign academic credentials must provide a transcribed academic transcript completed by a certified English translation and U.S. grade equivalencies.

Identification Badge Requirements - Distance Education Students
Per HSCEP OP 76.02, enrolled students are required to obtain an official student identification badge. This requirement also applies to distance education students even though they are not on campus. Should a distance education student be on campus, they must visibly wear the official student badge. Distance students may be required to wear a TTUHSC EP badge during clinical site rotations. For more information, refer to HSCEP OP 76.02.

    1. Follow the instructions for submission.
    2. Students will receive an email if photo is not within the specified guidelines.
  4. Once the Office of Student Affairs receives a completed notarized ID verification, AND a completed identification/security access form AND an acceptable electronic photo, the student will receive a student badge, via mail, to the address provided on the Identification/Security Access form.

Progression

Minimum Academic Requirements

  • Maintain a least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in graduate nursing coursework.
  • Grade of B or above in all graduate nursing coursework.
  • Students achieving a C in graduate course must repeat the course and earn a grade of B or better.
  • Students may only repeat one (1) graduate nursing course.

Readmission
A student who left in good standing and is seeking readmission must complete and submit an application for readmission. The admissions coordinator for the graduate program will notify the chair of graduate studies of the request for readmission and provide the student’s most recent transcripts, and a summary of the circumstances of the student’s withdrawal, if known. A student who was not in good standing at the time of his/her leave due to academic or disciplinary causes must complete and submit an application for readmission. The student must also submit a letter explaining the circumstances resulting in the withdrawal and his/her plan to improve or correct performance, if offered readmission. The admissions coordinator for the graduate program will notify the chair of graduate studies of the request for readmission and provide the student’s most recent transcripts, and a summary of the circumstances of the student’s withdrawal, if known. All requests for readmission must be made at least two months prior to the first day of the semester for which readmission is requested. The dean is responsible for overseeing all readmissions to the GGHSON. The minimum cumulative grade point average for readmission consideration is 2.7. The dean reviews all such requests and may take one of the following actions regarding readmission of a student who withdrew in good standing:

  • Eligible and admit
  • Eligible, as space permits and in order of request (in relation to other applications for readmission)
  • Not eligible

Conditions for Academic Dismissal

  • Earning less than a 3.0 semester or cumulative GPA in graduate nursing coursework.
  • Earning two (2) C grades or lower.
  • Earning an F in any graduate nursing coursework.

Academic Advising
The Assistant Dean for the graduate program directs academic advising for students enrolled in the graduate program in leadership program. Students receive their degree plan at orientation and are expected to follow the degree plan when registering for courses. Questions regarding registration, adding/dropping a course, or withdrawing from the program should be directed to the Assistant Dean for graduate program.

Degree Plan

Degree Requirements for the Graduate Program
Students are expected to complete the degree requirements set forth in the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON) Student Catalog in effect at the time of entry into the program. Under certain circumstances, only with the expressed approval of the dean may a different catalog be selected. In no case may a student complete the requirements set forth in a catalog more than seven years old. The catalog is published annually and its provisions are applicable during the stated school year.

Optional Elective: Students may enroll in either GNUR 5215  (2 SCH) or GNUR 5314  (Elective) (3 SCH). Note: Students matriculating in the GNUR 5314  elective course will graduate with a total of 34 credit hours.
