Tuition for Repeated or Excessive Undergraduate Hours

Texas Education Code - Section § 54.0154 states that “An institution of higher education may charge resident undergraduate student tuition at a higher rate than the rate charged to other resident undergraduate students (not to exceed the rate charged to nonresident undergraduate students) IF: before the semester or other academic session begins, the student has previously attempted a number of semester credit hours for courses taken at any institution of higher education while classified as a resident student for tuition purposes that exceeds, by at least 30 hours, the number of semester credit hours required for completion of the degree program in which the student is enrolled. For purposes of this subsection, an undergraduate student who is not enrolled in a degree program is considered to be enrolled in a degree program or programs requiring a minimum of 120 semester credit hours, including minors and double majors, and for completion of any certificate or other special program in which the student is also enrolled, including a program with a study abroad component. An institution of higher education that charges students tuition at a higher rate under this subsection may adopt a policy under which the institution exempts from the payment of that higher rate a student that is subject to the payment of the higher rate solely as a result of hardship as determined by the institution under the policy.” Students who were enrolled as an undergraduate in any institution of higher education prior to fall 1999 are exempt from this rule. Furthermore, students enrolled as undergraduate students prior to fall 2006 may not be charged a higher rate of tuition until the number of semester hours previously attempted exceeds the number of hours required for the student’s degree program by 45 hours.

Scholarships

The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON) offers various scholarship opportunities for nursing students. General scholarship announcements are made through CANVAS. Scholarships are disbursed and valid for one academic year (fall, spring, and summer semesters). Award eligibility and requirements are determined by the GGHSON scholarship committee and on an individual basis. Any student who is a non-resident or non-U.S. citizen and holds a competitive scholarship of at least $1,000 for the academic year or for a summer semester in which he/she is enrolled, is entitled to Texas resident tuition/fees without regard to the length of time he/she has resided in Texas.
