Dental professionals are expected, not only by patients but also by society as a whole, to possess certain attributes, which include, but are not limited to:
- Altruism, whereby they subordinate their own interests to care of their patients;
- High ethical and moral standards;
- Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, caring, compassion and respect in their interactions with patients, colleagues and others.
- Accountability, not only for their own actions, but also for those of their colleagues, which is the basis for the autonomy of the profession.
- Maintaining confidentiality concerning the patient and the patient’s records. The WLHSDM expects dental students to exhibit these attributes.
